There is something almost inexplicably charming about a Mid Century Modern house that has remained relatively unchanged since it was built. Walking into such a home is like stepping into to the past and for some it’s endearing and for others, often flippers, it’s something that needs to be “gutted and updated”. For the former a time capsule home is a testament to the timelessness of the design and that those who lived there felt that it did not need changing, and for the latter it’s time, sadly, to measure for new granite countertops.

Located at 2173 Redcliff, in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, is one such home. Designed and built by architect Albert P. Martin as his own residence the house was completed in 1952 and lived in by the family up until recently when it entered the market for the first time since being built. Situated on some challenging hillside terrain – in a neighborhood with many architecturally significant homes by architects including Richard Neutra, John Lautner, R.M. Schindler, and Lloyd Wright – A.P. Martin, who apprenticed in the legendary architect Richard Neutra, designed the home to compliment the rugged surroundings rather than try to ‘tame’ them. The result is striking three bedroom home that would be the architect’s only residential design and it has stood the test of time.
